In our journey through life, we often find ourselves clinging to the old and familiar. Sometimes, this serves us well - like savoring a vintage wine or cherishing a classic car. But there are times when holding onto the old can be detrimental, even dangerous. This principle applies not just to material things, but to our spiritual lives as well.
Consider the old covenant described in the Bible - a system of priests, sacrifices, and tabernacles. While it was good, holy, and God-given, it was never meant to be permanent. Instead, it was designed to point forward to something far greater - or rather, someone far greater: Jesus Christ.
The call to us today is clear: Don't settle for shadows when the reality has arrived. Don't cling to what is fading when you can live in what is eternal. Through Jesus, we now have access to a superior place - the true presence of God. We have a superior ministry - a perfect, eternal priest who intercedes for us. And we have a superior covenant - one that brings heart transformation, personal knowledge of God, and complete forgiveness of our sins.
Let's explore three key aspects of this new covenant:
1. Jesus Serves from a Higher Place
Unlike earthly priests who ministered in physical tabernacles, Jesus serves in heaven itself, in the true tabernacle built by God. More significantly, He is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. This seated position is crucial - it signifies that His work is complete. When Jesus uttered "It is finished" on the cross, He meant it. There's nothing left for Him to do; our salvation is secured.
We must be careful not to cling to earthly things as if they were the ultimate point. How often do we find ourselves quoting social media influencers, pastors, or books more than we quote Jesus and the Word of God? While these sources can be helpful, they are merely shadows pointing to the substance - Christ Himself. Our primary focus should always be on Jesus and His Word.
2. Jesus Ministers with Greater Power
Every priest in the old covenant offered gifts and sacrifices. But Jesus offered the only perfect sacrifice - Himself. His one act of obedience has eternal effect. Unlike the repeated offerings of earthly priests, Jesus' sacrifice was once and for all.
The law could command holiness, but it couldn't create it. It's like a parent commanding a child to do something perfectly the first time - the command alone doesn't create the ability. But Jesus gives us both the command and the power for truth and transformation. What the law demanded, the grace of Jesus now delivers.
3. Jesus Offers a Deeper Promise
The old covenant revealed human failure, but the new covenant reveals God's divine faithfulness. God's solution wasn't an improved version of the old system. Instead, He established an entirely new covenant, one written not on stone tablets, but on the hearts of believers.
This new covenant brings several profound promises:
- Eternal change: God writes His laws on our hearts, giving us new desires and new power through His Holy Spirit.
- Intimate relationship: It's not about religion, but about a close, personal relationship with God.
- Personal knowledge: Not second-hand faith, but first-hand fellowship with God.
- Perfect forgiveness: God not only forgives our sins but chooses to remember them no more.
Living Under the Better Covenant
So how do we live under this better covenant? Here are three key steps:
1. Rest in Jesus' completed work: Stop trying to earn God's favor through external means. Jesus is enough.
2. Rely on the Spirit's internal work: Allow the Holy Spirit to transform you from the inside out.
3. Rejoice in the full forgiveness granted through Christ: Your sins are forgotten, your guilt is removed, and there is no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus.
The new covenant is not an addition to the old - it's a complete upgrade into a new reality. It's not "Jesus and..." but simply Jesus. He is the superior priest, seated in victory and serving us. He is the superior mediator, interceding for us in heaven. And He is the superior covenant maker, writing grace into our hearts.
Reflection and Invitation
As we reflect on these truths, we're invited to examine our own lives. Are we still trying to live under the old covenant, striving to earn God's favor through our own efforts? Or have we fully embraced the new covenant, resting in the completed work of Christ?
If you've never experienced this new covenant relationship with God, know that it's available to you today. It's as simple as recognizing your need for a Savior, turning from your old ways, and putting your trust in Jesus Christ. He offers forgiveness, transformation, and a personal relationship with God.
For those who have already embraced this new covenant, let this be a reminder to fix your eyes on Jesus. Don't go back to the old ways. Don't settle for a copy when you have the reality. Stay with Jesus, the one who has made you new, forgiven, and forever His.
In a world that often values the new over the old, we find in Jesus a beautiful paradox - He is both the ancient of days and the one who makes all things new. His covenant is timeless, His love is endless, and His grace is sufficient for all our needs. May we all learn to live fully in the reality of this new and better covenant.
